2007 After seeing the official start of the 2007 Iditarod in Anchorage, we left the next day to head up the highway to Willow where the true start was. Only a 30 minute drive north from our house, we skiied in while Stephen towed a sled with tailgating supplies and sometimes Hanna. The race started on Willow lake - frozen as you can see above. Many onlookers were excited to see us build a fire and Stephen's use of the flint his Mom gave him drew a crowd and the local paper photographer. We watched as over half the mushers and dogs took off down the trail and stayed on for over 2 hours in the sun. It was an olympic experience with so much excitement. We will continue to follow the race to Nome which should last over 9 days. Since Iditarod started on Stephen's birthday he was rewarded with a kindly neighbor offering the use of his snow machine. All were excited to get a ride and now Stephen wants a snow machine more than ever!
